Flags, in particular national flags, are not just symbolic and synecdochic representations of spaces, but objects containing a sacred, sacrosanct presence. For DeWitt, it is these supposedly inviolable ideals he critiques within his work. As he says: “Someday hopefully I will get to permanently redesign the American flag, and make it into something that not just American patriots can agree on, but all the citizens of Earth. Consider these as possible options”.
