Ken Sortais

Sortais’ installation is based on two key Parisian sites, the Montmartre Cemetery and the Metro. The hanging was created from one of Hector Guimard’s famous oramented metro entrances (the ‘underground universe, the dark reflection of our unconscious’) and the sculpture the result of a moulding of an overthrown cat from the cemetery (‘a testimony to the city of the dead’). Whilst focusing on two locations key to his practice, Sortais’s engages with them through intentionally ‘mis-using symbolic forms’, rearranging them in intentionally curious, improbable, yet strangely alluring ways.
